Data Visualization and Communication

Overview: This class introduces students to the importance of using statistics to determine if conditions and groups are different from each other.  It focuses on factorial research designs and how to interpret the statistics generated by SPSS or Jamovi.

Topics Covered:

  • Understanding how different types of plots emphasize different aspects of the data
  • Determining plots based on questions to be answered using plots
  • Best practices of plotting waveform graphs
  • Best practices of plotting scalp maps
  • Class activity: Determine what is wrong with the plotting of some data (waveforms and scalp maps) and create your own plots using best practices
  • Paper dissection: Guided discussion of article with correct but confusing graphs.  Discussion of how to better present data to best communicate experimental outcomes

Lab: Data Visualization

In this lab students will learn to create waveform plots and scalp maps using best practices suggested by the Society for Psychophysiological Research.
