Source of the EEG Waveform

Fundamentals of ERP Recording

Overview: This module is designed to introduce students to electroencephalography equipment. Can be combined with a lab tour and/or select slides from Module 7.

Topics Covered:

  • The parts and functions of EEG and ERP systems
  • Basics of electricity
  • Types of electrodes (ground, reference, active, and electrooculogram)
  • Common-mode rejection
  • Electrode caps and standard configurations

Source of the EEG Waveform

Overview: This module is designed to provide students with a conceptual understanding of how the brain produces an EEG signal and the factors that influence the strength and polarity of the signal.

Topics Covered:

  • Action potentials and post-synaptic potentials
  • How post-synaptic potentials create neural dipoles
  • How dipoles summate to create a scalp distribution
  • How the EEG waveform tracks changes in scalp voltage over time
  • Factors that influence the strength and polarity of the EEG waveform
