About Labs:
What are the labs like?
- Modules 9, 10, 11, and 12 have associated In-Class and Take-Home Lab Assignments.
- In-class Labs (designed to be completed during class time)
- In-class Labs guide students through the steps so they know WHAT to do
- In-class Lab Assignments use N400 data and typically use 1 or 2 example data sets
- In-class Labs have illustrated step by step instructions.
- Take-home Labs (designed to be completed outside of class)
- Take-home Labs apply the same data processing steps but help assess students’ knowledge about WHY they do those steps
- Take-home Lab Assignments use P3 data and multiple data sets
- Take-home Labs expect students to refer to In-class lab illustrations if they need reminders.
What files are associated with each lab? (both in-class and take home)?
Each lab assignment has a Guide, Worksheet, Key, and several Data Files.
- Guides have the lab instructions to follow along with, as well as questions pertaining to the lab.
- Worksheets have the questions present within the Guides, as well as designated spaces to answer the questions.
- Use Worksheets in conjunction with the Guides
- Worksheets are designed to make it easier to turn the work in
- However, Worksheets are optional resources, as they have the same questions as are present in the Guides.
- Instructor Keys provide answers to the questions associated with the labs
- Data Files are associated with each lab and are specified in the Guide.
Grading Labs
- On the cover page of each Worksheet is a yellow highlighted section for a grade
- Instructors can decide whether or not they want to grade the in-class labs or just use them as class room instruction
- Instructors can determine how many points are associated with each question on the Worksheets
- One grading rubric
- 0 points = no answer/completely incorrect answer
- 1 point = partial or partially incorrect answer
- 2 points = mostly correct, adequate answer
- 3 point = excellent, fully explained answer
- Total grade = number of points earned / total number of points possible
