Module 3 Overview:
This module is designed to provide students with a conceptual understanding of the physical characteristics of ERP components and how ERP components can be used to make inferences.
Units:
Physical Characteristics of ERP Components
Overview: This unit is designed to provide students with a conceptual understanding of the physical characteristics of ERP components (deflections in the waveform) and how they are described and measured.
Learning Goals:
- Explain how noise in ERP data can be reduced by averaging across multiple trials
- Identify ERP components based on their timing and polarity
- Interpret ERP data visualizations
- Describe characteristics of ERP data such as amplitude, latency, and scalp distribution
Materials Included: Slides, In-class Activity
Making Inferences about ERP Components
Overview: This unit is designed to provide students with a conceptual understanding of how ERP components can be used to make inferences about neural sources and to make cognitive associations.
Learning Goals:
- Explain why there is not a one-to-one correspondence between an ERP component and a single neural source
- Explain the Inverse Problem
- Explain how to make cognitive associations with ERP components
- Be able to draw and interpret a difference wave
Materials Included: Slides, In-class Activity, Take-home Activities
